PH of Feed Water in Steam Drum

03/25/2018 3:51 AM

Dear All
I want to know that why after dozing ammonia or morphiline at upstream of deaerator we doze trisodium phosphate in steam drum to increase PH . Whether PH of water comes down when water reaches boiler then how PH reduces?
Regards
Pradeep

I would suspect that it has to do with the materials, alloy types, and temperature of operation....these vary throughout the system and must be addressed to control corrosion....

While TSP does assist with pH maintenance, its main purpose is to combine with any remaining salts in the feedwater, the resulting sludge settles and is removed either automatically or manually at blowdown.

Surely there must be an Operating Manual for this equipment that says so?

  • Raising the pH of the drum contents is a Good Thing as regards protecting the structure of the boiler against corrosion.
  • Ammonia and morphiline increase pH and leave no residue in the drum, which is a Good Thing, as there is less sludge to wash out or blow down.
  • Trisodium phosphate is a cleaning agent, which is a Good Thing, and aids in the formation of sludge, which is removed during blowdown or washout, while keeping surfaces clean, which is also a Good Thing.

End of.

Morphiline and ammonia are volatile and TSP/DSP are not.

That means the phosphates do not get carried with the steam but stay in the water.
