New, Lawful Permanent Resident (Electrical Engineer) in U.S.--Problems in Job Search

07/12/2018 6:02 PM

Dear All,

I have searched this website from Google and a new member of this forum. I have moved to US from Pakistan in March 2018 as lawful Permanent Resident. I am Graduate Electrical Engineer, did my Graduation in Electrical Engineering from Pakistan. I have seven years of work experience in Construction of Grid Stations and Transmission Lines in Pakistan. Since last March to present day, I have applied in many companies for different Job positions but didn't get any positive response: Now want to discuss following questions with you all.

1- Almost every company here has requirement of "Engineer in Training License (EIT)", after passing Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. I don’t have "EIT" License. If I pass FE Exam in future by doing too much study, can I get Job in Engineering field with non non ABET accredited Pakistani Engineering Degree?

2- If I try to find any Technician or Supervisor type job then in those jobs they have requirement of "Journey man Linemen Certification" or "Journey man Electrician Certification". Both these certifications required three/four years of apprenticeships.

3- Also in most of Engineering jobs companies have requirement of autocad and so many other designing softwares. I also don't know any designing software but only know few basics of autocad. Should I get Certification or Certificate of Autocad?

4- If I think to do Masters or for any Graduate Certificate then for study I have no Finance.

Please guide me how to get at least entery level Job in Electrical Engineering Field without EIT license and with non ABET accredited degree. Also if I want to do Masters or any Graduate Certificate, then how to get financial aid or any scholarship for that. As Permanent Resident will I be eligible to get Financial aid?

Please help me, I don't no anyone in USA in Engineering Field. I am currently in New York and can go to any state in USA for Job. Thanks

Regards

Ali

Your communication skills are admirable for a newly minted American, this will certainly help you.

What sort of enterprises have you been applying to? Construction companies specializing in power stations, transmission line erectors, maritime, electromotive (trains, subway), existing industrial facilities (hospital, mining concerns, vegetable cannery, paper mill).

While an Architectural/Engineer firm would likely require a degree and license, perhaps a company who floats a number of seafood processing boats would be more considerate of your circumstance.

Yes, as a green card holder you are eligible for federal financial aid...

You’ve been here for 4-5 months, it may seem difficult, but keep searching and don't get too discouraged. So far your doing the right things, open mind on a variety of job types in your search. And also your networking.

I'm also impressed on your command of English. Just keep it up, something will develop.

I believe you need to be enrolled in an ABET program to take the FE exam...

For a PE license, one doesn't. But you have to have worked under someone that has a PE for a certain amount of time. As well as being giving a letter of recommendation from a PE to the board to take the PE exam.

Not having this, doesn't necessary exclude you, but it does make it more difficult.

Ali,

I'll get in a plug for our owners -- IEEE. I'm sure you'll find useful resources through the website.

Many people will tell you that a lot of job openings are not advertised; you need to know someone who works at a company to hear about open positions. One way for you to meet other engineers locally is to join a local chapter of IEEE. In addition to hearing about job openings you will probably also get good advice on how to go about getting selling yourself. You might even meet someone else who has gone through the process that you are just starting.

IEEE also has job postings and miscellaneous career advice.

Good luck with your search! Let us know how you're getting along.

Some here probably can't see the IEEE forest for the trees.

Not job hunting, I forget that the best employment source may be right here in the "forest".

Keep up the search and maybe offer your services on temp basis at a lower rate to get into the industry. My friend is Russian engineer also Canadian PNG and for 5 years he had to wash windows, believe me this man is a genius and now works for a foreign car manufacturer in Canada. His expertise has made this plant the show case for the manufacturer and he was after only 1 year there made hero of the plant. Still he went through hell to get there and he still loves Canada despite the crap. As a millwright/ engineer I really loved working with him and we had lively discussions.

I can not help you with your immediate problem but I sure can symphonize with your predicament. It is hard to break into a field in a new country with a degree or even a certificate from another country (in my case a certificate issued in West Africa). I had similar problems in my new home. Here (and then) a little bull that escapes his paddock (field for you Americans) can travel a long way so I was lucky and got a job with a state government instrumentality where I stayed for the next ten years. Though hard, it can be done so don't despair, It will happen. Good luck and happy hunting.

I knew a guy, he was from Hong Kong, he was an operating engineer. His main job was to secure the tunnels from flooding..

We, ended up going to the same truck driver training school, we were the nerds of the group, somebody knew this and made us bunk in the same room, we studied hard, we both passed the driver tests, in less than 5 minutes ( the director said this was a new record ) .

He went on to school where he attined the necessary credentials where he could use his engineering skills, as such, he is very successful today. I often think back of the time we spent together, I learned a lot. He was always saying, anyone can be anything here.

If he could do it, you could.

Welcome.

Citizen.

Welcome to CR4, but with me in the UK I can't help, because I know little of USA engineering practice.

But a couple questions arise. As you can't afford to pay for training and you seek finance for it, does that imply you have no income, or do you have a job at the moment, at least paying enough to live on. This will keep you going and give you time to settle down whilst looking for the job you want.

....and a comment, I agree, as others have said, your written English is very good, and valuable as much communication today is in writing - an important point to make, because it could matter to engineers who are of the old school - that are likely to be in an executive position in the companies you approach.

.....and your many replies are noted and welcome - but being new here, you will not know that a lot of OP's don't bother with feedback....and some not even a 'thankyou'.

I wish you well, good luck!

MuhammadAli,

That is an aphorism, or a statement that has a lesson. "You can't see the forest for the trees." If you are standing in a forest, you see the individual trees but you have to stand further away, outside of the edge of the forest, before you can see the forest as a whole. When we use it, we are meaning that you are standing too close to the problem or subject, and need to step away some then you can see how the individual parts of the problem or subject fit into the whole. From this viewpoint you can then figure out how to proceed.

Yes, if you join a local chapter you'll definitely meet other engineers. Local groups sponsor speakers and other kinds of events. You can probably attend programs without joining although you might have to pay an admission charge.

When you find contact information for a local group, introduce yourself by email to the contact. That way you will know at least one person when you first meet the group. It will be good for you to maintain contact with others in your profession while you are working towards an engineering job.
