Yes, sounds like it is stuck. However, to find out WHY, we need more information.

  • What is the material you are trying to regulate with the valve?
  • What are the process conditions (temperature & pressure) at the valve?
  • What is the size of the valve?
  • Is the valve rated for the process conditions it is encountering?

Aside from knowing the answers to these questions, we cannot know what is going on. Therefore, the only recommendations are:

  1. Replace the valve
  2. Repair the valve

3. Find out what is jamming the valve, and remove the obstruction.

Isolate the valve and repair/replace it. Have you contacted the manufacturer?

Can you drive the valve with the local motor control buttons?

I worked in a power station where there were Auma motorised actuators on inlet and outlet dampers on precipitators and the mechanicals needed to be free and well lubricated. Driving them by hand was almost a Herculean effort and was only used to set the limits at each end of the travel.

I would suspect a mechanical failure, there being a fault in the driven element or dry bearing causing the problem. Usually the torque reduction produces a large amount of force and I have seen a valve shaft have its neck wrung and snapped on a steam valve driven by an Auma.

The SCADA is likely stopping the operate signal because it has detected that the valve has not completed its cycle in the allowed time.

Following from others, is the problem for "opening" the valve?

Sometimes the static load on a closed valve can make them VERY difficult to operate. On larger systems it is common to have a smaller bypass valve to reduce the pressure difference across the valve so that it can then move.

The local Maintenance Fitter will have solutions. Talk to this individual.

It wouldn't be the first time an unintended solid, such as an old mattress, a lump of wood or a dead body has ended up inside a valve...
