Such a concept is, at the moment, heading towards being a matter of personal preference. It is not necessary to have a team approach, and vote on it.

However, if a straw poll is necessary, then adding two posts, one "for", and one "against" below could deploy the CR4 "good answer" mechanism in its delivery. Subscribers could then use this mechanism to come up with a non-statistically-significant result.

You can wait and you will wait.

No need for a flying car here.

Lets first solve the issue of widespread media misinformation, fake conspiracies and idiot cults like the flat earthers, both examples of dumbing down the population in general, then we can look at giving people more responsibility like cars that fly.

WHO IS WITH ME !!

Well we could genetically engineer giant birds and just fly them around...that would eliminate the loss of birds and the cost of ownership....

...and we could engineer them to eat plastic as well, eliminating yet another problem....Giant plastic eating birds that you ride like Pegasus, what could be more natural than that...?

When earthbound minions start driving cars with a high degree of safety, then the next evolutionary step would be towards lighter than air crafts, unfortunately hell will need to freeze over first.

What a brilliant idea so we can have three dimensional crashes. How do the traffic lights remain up, why using Tesla sky hooks of course. To quote a cartoon saying flying is just crashing with style!

About 1783. The Montgolfier brothers, in France.

The French inventor Henri Giffard also deserves a mention.

Granted, a fender-bender at 1000 ft would be a bad thing. This article describes the problems.

https://www.vice.com/en/article/7xm794/flying-cars-air-traffic-control-nasa

If the flying cars are hover vehicles (e.g. quadcopter), the problem is not quite as bad. A hover vehicle can stop and maneuver whereas a fixed-wing craft cannot.

One method to (hopefully) prevent air crashes is to have some computer control, similar to the drone shows...

The problem here is a computer failure (or hacking) could result in massive casualties.

I believe a better system would be a decentralized system. Each craft would have an override to the controls to prevent it from approaching other craft or obstacles closer than some fixed distance. Birds in flocks and fish in schools navigate by remaining a fixed distance from their nearest neighbors.

There is a Future Flight Government process going on which includes flying taxis, especially from city hubs (assuming rich people will still inhabit cities ).

One aspect that came up was the danger from props when taxiing to the offloading hub.

Simple solution : Have powered autonomous landing decks. Kill the props after landing on the decks. Taxi to the hub and then back atter re-loading for take off.

Assumes you can land on skids , or on a road worthy landing deck at destination.

Saves on having to haul 3 or 4 sets of wheels into the air.

Also works with Coanda fan powered flying vehicles.

Paul Moller has been trying to do it for a while. Being in Mechanics Illustrated, Popular Science.

that problem is, the public that’s its focus at customers needs to learn how to walk first.

Walk first? Then fly? Pshaw.

A couple of years ago I worked with a woman, in her 50's I believe, who was hit head on on her way home from work on a local 2 lane road. 55mph speed limit.

She was struck head on by a teen-age girl who drifted into her lane. The girl was texting.

18 months of hospitals and rehab before she came back to work. Literally bankrupted the girl's family as they didn't have near enough insurance to cover the costs. The girl got probation.

The only good thing about this kind of collision in the air is that the perp is unlikely to survive to do it again.

I'm totally against flying vehicles unless they are completely autonomous with absolutely no chance of passenger control.

About 15-20 years ago, they thought they’d solve that problem... with the advancement of GPS, that all the flying cars would have a transponder, to let a main control center know where it was as well the altitude and all other pertinent information and data.

Along with this, all the data from the other flying cars in flight...and the main computer would analyze the flights to avoid crashes... you know to let the driver/pilot do more important things,... like taking selfie’s and texting...

According to statistica.com there were over 273.000,000 registered automobiles in the US in 2018. Does anybody really believe we will ever have the computers and infrastructure to track, much less command and control, the same amount of aerial vehicles any time in the next 100 years.

The FAA can barely keep up with civil and commercial aviation. There's no way I can believe there will ever be a system to handle 3 dimensional automobile travel from their homes to their workplaces, to unscheduled stops and back home again.

BTW, transponders work fine. For thousands of commercial flights and a few civil aircraft that mingle with them. Will that scale up to millions of flying cars? I don't think so.

. . .that's all part of the long-range plan that had it's gestation in the '60's. In it's infancy during the '70's with a brief pause during the disco era. It started to toddle around during the '80's and then hit primary school during the '90's. By the turn of the century it was into full-on raging hormones and in the last ten years settled down into the McMansions in suburbia and has been subverting the minds of the newest generations.

I'm not worried all that much about the technology.

I'm more worried about the gov't operators and regulators who will run and manage the system. The FAA is still a mess with ancient technology because the pols spent all the money in the aviation trust fund on other stuff.

People who have not been around general aviation or military flight have no clue. The ocean might be a harsh mistress, but that ain't nothing compared to flight.
