What is the meaning of this symbol on a 11kV CB Panel

11/03/2021 2:15 PM

Hello engineers, I came across an HV CB panel that had the following schematic,

I do understand the earth switch and surge arrestersymbols, but I do not understand the symbol with a capacitor connected in series with what appears to be a lamp to the earth. The CB panel is made by TBEA. Any help please, thanks.

A wild guess: a lamp that lights when AC voltage is present. The capacitor would limit the current through the lamp.

The "capacitor" symbol might instead be a "normally open contact" symbol. (One of the lines in a "capacitor" symbol is often shown curved.}

It could be a combination power available and ground fault indicator, where two of the lamps illuminate brightly and the grounded phase lamp is dim or out. At 11kV, capacitor coupling is cheaper than transformer or resistor coupled lamps. Not familiar with that manufacturer. Also unusual but not impossible to see an ungrounded or floating ground 11kV power system.

Id be interested in what the 4 circles are supposed to indicate? Current transformers?

The two straight lines are a "fixed capacitor". As opposed to a polarised capacitor which has one curved line. (Or even a flux capacitor: two straight lines with an arrow through).

Thanks, so what could be the purpose or function of such configuration?

It is there to provide reactive impedance, thereby matching the indicator voltage to the supply voltage without the nuisance of dissipating heat through a series resistor.

TBEA Co., Ltd., previously known as Tebian Electric Apparatus, is a Chinese manufacturer of power transformers and other electrical equipment, and a developer of transmission projects. Along with competitors Tianwei Baobian Electric and the XD Group, it is one of the major Chinese manufacturers of transformers.

Look at #4, ground fault lights or power available lights, either or both.

<...The CB panel is made by TBEA. Any help please...>

The manufacturer's contact details will be there on a label somewhere, and there have never been so many telephones on the planet as there are today.

You said: "but I do not understand the symbol with a capacitor connected in series with what appears to be a lamp to the earth."

But I can't see any symbol other than the capacitor, lamp and earth:-

I agree with posts #1 and #8: it's just a lamp to indicate AC power present.

Hello, thanks for the inciteful responses, I checked on the design memorandum and it is a voltage indication, meaning that when the circuit is energized, this light shall be on

And, on an ungrounded power system, it can serve as a crude ground fault indicator, where the grounded phase will be dim, and the 2 ungrounded phases will show brighter than normal
