Gap between vessel saddles and top of the foundation

06/03/2008 11:57 AM

During the installation of one of the huge horizontal vessel 400T in the plant located in middle east, it was found that there is a gap of 38 mm between fixed saddle base plate and foundation top to at one end after mounted the vessel on the foundation. what is the best solution to clear this gap. one proposed solution is install shims and another solution is weld additional thin plat to the base plat and one last solution is to cut the saddle to the right level required. any recommendation

If your support points are not being used (a gap of 38mm) then the design assumptions are wrong or the fabrication is wrong.

First you need to know why the tank does not fit to its supports before any solution can be suggested.

Consequences could be:

  • Other supports are taking too great a load and will give way
  • The tank is not supported correctly and will break or leak when loaded (not always immediately but due to creep or fatigue)

You need some advice from your structural/vessel engineer on this. Do you have one? If not, you should get one.

Thanks for the answer and our structural engineer is looking at it however preliminary cause is from the manufacturer as both saddles have some sign of slightly twisting may be during the heat treatment of the vessel.

Is this the sliding end or the fixed end? If it's the fixed end, just grout it in with a non shrink grout that is suitable for grouting machine bases.
