Good suggestions!

Pull it down and add them, and maybe a bit of clean up?

You beat me to it- I just sent my copy of the summary to Transcendian. Yours is a bit cleaner than mine- I left the ID's of the contributors, and included some of the more pertinent discussions.

I'd say that there's a fundamental question here: is it a list of books that could recover the mankind knowledge, or you're talking about titles containing survival-in-the-wild stuff? Two different things here...

From Psych. 101: The 3 prerequisites for mammalian life are; Food, Shelter, and Sex. Lower animals are known have different priorities of the same 3. When you have finished your 'homework', you can go back to the Lab and re-invent the dishwasher.

Re: What Reading List Would Enable the Rebuilding of Civilization? - re-deux

It seems to me, the list ought to be broken up into a couple of categories: basic survival, such as how to get sustenance and protect oneself immediately after the "collapse", and then another section on how to rebuild, after the dust has cleared. For instance, the plant food references would belong with the basic survival set, and the Machinery's Handbook and CRC manuals would be useful for rebuilding.

*sigh*

And we should have something on government

*sigh*

The Federalist and The Anti-Federalist papers - both sides in numerous arguments

Alexis de Tocqueville - Democracy in America - admiring, but not uncritical

That pretty well takes care of our side of the pond for theory

Maybe we'll skip the bits on how it all came out

Others?

: " we hold these truths to be self evident "..

in cr4 ..i was reading , i forget where or who*

my paraphrase :..Greeks at Thermopile was part of the reading,..the person wondered at the thought of how a fragile , budding social system could choose to wage war when all odds were overwhelming...lions 70 , settlers 0..

... i suppose i was as idealistic in that document as either of the other two i mentioned..

Seems to me that many of the greatest advancements in our existing civilization are related to metallurgy. Remember, bronze, iron, etc? I would recommend adding a text on metallurgy.

WOW, what a great list ... I might only add:

- primary through university text books (we gotta teach the new youth of our 'reboot' civilization

- books on astronomy (we will be looking up now and then)

- books on art history (it's not all about the sciences)

- books on human history (everyone needs to know something about their roots ... and MAYBE we can avoid some of the mistakes made that possibly put us in the 'need to reboot mode')

- music (okay, not books, but I would hate to not have some way to remember the music)

This is very cool, by the way ... if it catches on, Amazon is gonna do very well

Kind regards ...

Henley's 20th Century Formulas, Processes, and Trade Secrets. Tells how to make everything from adhesives to wine and liquor. It's been out of print for years, but still available used for $10-$50.
