Corrosion Resistance of 200 series : is it as goog as 300 series of SS ?

02/08/2011 1:04 AM

Hello!

200 series of SS is cheaper beacuse of lesser Nickel. Manganese and Nitrogen replace Ni to some extent.

Please share your experience of corrsion resistance of 200 series - is it as good as 300 series ?.

Application involves SS enclosures for indoor & outdoor use.

Thsnks!

The 200 series is austenitic (same as the 300 series) and 201 is essentially a low nickel version of 301 with a very high work hardening rate. Likewise, 202 is a general purpose SST and a low Ni equivalent of type 302 with equal corrosion resistance. The rate of strain hardening of SST is primarily determined by the nickel content and, to a lesser extent, carbon. As the nickel to chromium ratio is increased, formability increases. The 200 series has slightly higher tensile, yield, and hardness than their 300 series equivalents with about the same elongation.

It mostly comes down to the forming and finishing processes, availability and cost.
