Small Wet Spots on Carpet in Various Parts of House

09/01/2011 1:48 AM

First of all, we have no pets and our foundation is cement. Our home was built in the late 80s. I noticed my carpet was wet near where the area the AC/filter are housed, but didn't notice any leaks in the closet or behind the filter. I also saw no leaks on the roof and when I applied pressure the the spot, it got wetter. Tonight I found another wet spot in my son's room near his closet nowhere near a water source. We're in Oklahoma where we've had the record setting hot Summer and the A/C is running all the time. Is it possible this could be happening from the moisture in the air? Also, we bought our house two years ago and noticed a similar situation in a hallway a few months after moving in. We used a shop vac to suck up the water and it never came back. We assumed that spot may be leaking from the bathroom, but never noticed more water after that. Any suggestions? I definitely want to try the shop vac method again over the weekend before calling someone.

Also, the AC unit was completely replaced one year ago - and I mean EVERYTHING was completely replaced. So I hate to think something on the indoor part of the unit within that closet is busted. And, by the way, our water heater is in the garage quite far from these spots.

I don't mean to offend, but are you sure it's just water? Is anyone in your household prone to sleepwalking? Could it be an un-reported spill? Just trying to cover all the bases.

How much rain have you had? Is it possible that the ground water level is high because of the rain?

Do you have a sump pump? If so, has that been running.

My follks had water come into their basement through cracks in the cement whenever the ground water level came up due to rain. They had a sump pump, but the drain tile and sump pump were improperly installed to prevent that issue.

Their house was built in a low area near the bottom of a valley.

Either someone is pouring fluid on those spots or they are being wicked up from under the foundation.

Concrete will absorb moisture.

If a waterline has fractured under the foundation you could see a problem like this.

Also, AC units should have a drain pipe for the condensed water drawn out of your house's interior. Check that the AC drain line drains away from the house.

Also, check your downspouts that they also drain away from the house.

I live in Arizona, most of the time, and during the summer with a relative humidity that runs between 10 and 20% my ac produces 5 gallons of condensate every 24 hours.

Coming from Ark. I can imagine that your unit is producing much more water than that.

If your condensate drain line runs through your attic, as mine does, it may be leaking somewhere. You'll need to visually inspect the attic to be sure that it isn't leaking and that the water isn't following a rafter or joist until it drips down on the ceiling below.

Or, simplistically, is the ceiling wet, above the wet spot on the floor?

condensation on the piping of the A/C in high humidity will drip. Changes in humidity and/or temp will stop condensation, but the moisture and dampness from the drops will remain in a carpet

One of three:

1. Hot water line broken in slab.

2. Cold water line broken in slab.

3. Drain line from ac broken in slab.

First check line of sight where the outlets are in the house. It will be broken and seeping by way of a crack. Turn all water off and monitor the meter for awhile. If it moves it will be a water leak. If not it will be a drain from ac which is probably stopped up.
