Best Coating for an Amine Storage Tank

06/11/2013 3:23 AM

we have a problem with coating for a lean Amine storage tank. it has:

design temperature=132 c operating temperature=101.2 c .It is situated in a hot and humid industrial condition.

content(wt%): H2O=74.84 CO2=0.11 H2S=0.033 DiethanolAmine (DEA)=25.014 H2S(ppmw)=350 CO2(ppmw)=1160

the material of this tank is A283

What is the best coating(or painting system) for inside and outside of this tank?

standards: API650-ISO12944- SSPC-SP1

thanks a lot for your attention

With what is the tank coated at this moment, both inside and outside, and what is the nature of the perceived problem?

because of the high temperature and chemical analysis of content(high corrosion), no paint manufacture could not propose any paint system and warranty that system for 10 years.

it has not been in service yet.

There is still no answer to the query about the perceived problem. Why is a problem perceived to exist in this particular case? Has the tank been fabricated in the wrong material and the hapless original posting is about finding a solution that doesn't involve re-making the tank in something else? Ask the originator why the materials of construction are what they are, and why someting more compatible with DEA was not selected instead beforehand, such as the materials from which the adjacent pipelines and other wetted equipment are made. If these are lined pipe, use the same materials for the tank as the stuff from which the lining for the pipes is made. If the pipes are non-metallic, use that material for the tank inner coating.

How big is this tank? Is it possible to get someone inside it to carry out the work safely or is some form of remote application needed? Are there any process implications with reducing the nozzles' sizes through applying a coating?

Is the tank lagged? If not, why not? If it is, why cannot the lagging form the outer coating?

Why cannot the temperature of the contents be lowered before putting it in the tank?

<pauses>

Take a look at Derakane resins from Ashland. Very expensive but very versatile. They are normally used in combination with fiberglass but could very likely be used as a coating. Might also be possible to have a dual laminate construction.

Did you not know what would be stored in the tank when it was ordered? Did building the correct tank cost too much?

Did you order "something" in hopes that an anonymous forum would save your job later?

CLEARLY, this detail should have been considered and discussed with the supplier, before placing the tank on order.

Again I say, Did you not know what would be stored in the tank when it was ordered?

Good luck in your job search.

Dear PWSlack

Our company is not a designer Co. it is a construction contractor. we cant change the process. The designer Co. choose that material for the tank and we just constructed. Now, nobody can propose a good coating system. The paint system that designer proposed (1-Phenolic Epoxy 2-vinyl aster glass flake), just rejected by our owner. I want to help designer for solving this problem. We have short time to decide. The input and output pipeline is carbon steel (NACE)

Thank you for your attention.

Dear lyn

I know what you say but there are some problems between our consultant (designer) and owner, because the owner had approved all documents but now they say: this paint system is not sufficient and should be change. Perhaps it is crazy in Europe or modern country but unfortunately, we have these kinds of problem in our country. Although our consultant company is an Italian Co. and we didn't think this problem would happen.

Thank you for your attention.

Simple. Let the design company handle it, and walk away, seriously.

This seems to either be a common problem in some countries, although 90% of the time we never know from what country new posters originate.

Or, it's just a common excuse among people who screw up.

You will need to enlist the help of a paint manufacturer and give them complete fabrication and use information.

An anonymous forum, with limited information will not solve this problem.

Or, put it back in the hands of the tank people.
