UPS Battery

Hello, I would like to ask one question about the battery of ups . Suppose if we are using 5 kva ups , so we have to put the 12 volt 15 battery . Because we need the output of 230 volt . But my question is that why we keep the 15 battery of 12volt why we don't keep 16 battery bcoz if we calculated the output of these battery will be around 180 that is much less but still we all are using and it's working. Plesse do the needful fast.

Your question does not contain many details but I suspect you lack a fundamental understanding of the UPS. Most UPS units store electrical energy in a batter (typically 12 VDC) and provide "line power" that is 50 Hz or 60 Hz (depending upon country) at a voltage of 115 VAC or 230 VAC (depending upon country). The output voltage of ALTERNATING CURRENT is produced by the circuits using the DIRECT CURRENT from the batteries. The voltage of the batteries does matter to the UPS circuit designer but you might think of it as not mattering to the consumer/user.

This is not my ans . I hsd asked u why we are using 12 volt 15 battery in 5 kva ups if it delivered 230 volts because the 12 volt 15 battery output is only 180 volts ,so how it can delivered 230 volt

A single - just one - 12 volt DC battery can produce 230 volts AC when the proper power converter is used.

Like this one, which produces 110 VAC from a car's 12-volt cigarette lighter plug:

outlets-inverter-adapter-automobile+110+VAC+power

Well, since you don't like my correct answer in posting #1 then let's try this answer. Since the Americans made common the 12V battery it is measured in imperial volts. Being in another country you are probably using the metric system of measurement (a better system but don't get me going on that rant). Since you have two different systems you must convert between them. The 180 imperial volts of battery power is equivalent to 220 metric volts of UPS power.

As an alternative approach you could consider either posting more details in your question or give consideration to the possibility that the engineers answering your question might actually know a little about engineering.

So u mean to say that the 180 volt of battery is equal to 230 volts of ups. How it is possible ? It doesn't seem as a correct ans ...... plz come with a some correct answer..

I presume that means 15 batteries, each one having a rating of 12Volts at 26Ampere-hours.

It would probably be clearer if you stopped using teenager jargon and started using complete words and sentences.

Dear Deepu,

Actually, I think you have not tried to understand the posts. Members of the forum have tried to make you understand with great patience. Fact is that numbers of batteries is not a matter. Possibly all your 15 batts. are connected in parallel. So the bank of batts. are supplying 12V DC (may vary according to the circuit in case of mixed conection, so you are to measure the output voltage of Batt. bank.) of large current. This 12 volts (or more) is converted to 230V AC through electronic devices. But how long your UPS would supply? This would depend on the ampere-hour of the batts. bank. Check the ratings labelled on the Batts. Now come to point of 15 batts. This would depend on the output capacity for use designed by the manufacturer of the UPS. You can use 16, 17 or more batts. for supplying 230V AC for longer period. But if you increase the number of batts. you would have possibly need to modify the circuit in order to handle more current by the UPS circuit. Thanks

SIR,

what is the dc bus voltage of your ups, the manufacture designed for the ups in particular dc voltage and they provided that particular dc charger card. first find out in that 16 battery's which one is week. those battery's in good condition or not the total voltage of 16 battery's 192v. first check your battery with battery tester. the ups shown may be charging voltage, in the charging time each battery take 13.5v.

How have you calculated 180 Volts? You batteries are series- connected?

How much is 180 times the square root of 2?

The closer you are to 230 volts (=- 5%- or =-10%) The less electronics are reqired in the inverter. Yours has probably been designed to operate with a series regulator/ chopper. The 12 Volts to ??? use transformation, or with transformers or with multipliers, the latter not very plausible in a high power system.

You should understand what is the UPS and how it works. It is not a matter how many battery is installed inside the UPS. It is How the UPS is designed. The design is in the sense of the UPS circuitry. Basically, 15 unit of 12V battery that is connected in series will give you 180V, base on 15x12=180V. That is correct. But in normal operation when your UPS is connected to the main power supply, you still get a 230V output for you load.

Once your main power supply is outage, your UPS will discharge it battery voltage to support your load. Don't forget that your battery is in DC voltage and NOT in AC voltage. There will be a conversion of DC Voltage to AC voltage. During this conversion take place your battery will be converted to 230V output. How many battery inside the UPS is not the main problem that you need to know but the total of time that the UPS can back up your system is the most importance.
