Hydrogen Analyzers for Hydrogen Generation Plant

11/26/2014 2:26 AM

Various vendors for Hydrogen generation plant installed in Power plants offer indirect measurement of hydrogen content in oxygen i.e. Oxygen analyzers (O2 sensor with transmitters).

The clarification for the offering is given that the Hydrogen analyzers available in market have least count of +/-1 which is too low for performance guarantee if installed for Hydrogen generation plant.

Are there are any analyzers for direct hydrogen measurement available?

Where have you looked? Google? Globalspec? Alibaba? Hach? Endress?

Not sure if this is what you are after:

Other than that check mass flow meters that can give you production rates.

Hydrogen in Oxygen sounds pretty dangerous.

Where is hydrogen getting mixed with oxygen?

Hydrogen is produced from water disassociation using electric power, based on Bipolar Pressurized Water Electrolysis Based System.Hydrogen & oxygen generated in electrolyser mixed with electrolyte are sent to hydrogen and oxygen separators, there hydrogen and oxygen are separated with electrolyte due to gravity. The hydrogen is allowed to pass to deoxo system & hydrogen dryer to remove its moisture and oxygen, purity of H2 gas is measured at dryer exit. here vendors provide Online Oxygen Trace PPM instead of Hydrogen analyzers for guaranteed >99.9% Hydrogen. Later on the H2 gas is compressed and forwrded to Hydrogen filling manifold and cylinder storage area where it shall be used for Turbine Generator cooling in power plnats.

So you are saying that you need out of this process a 99.9% clean Hydrogen gas?

If I understand right you deoxidise the Hydrogen gas with the remaining oxygen after the separation and then remove the moisture. Where in this process do you need to measure the Hydrogen? Me thinks you better get a measurement on Oxygen to make sure you have none (0.01%) left.

This what you need?

1. Purity of hydrogen needs to be measured from Hydrogen analyser and not oxygen as traces of oxygen needs to be measured in hydrogen gas

2. The process commits 99.9% purity H2 gas. hence, indirect measurement through oxygen analyser for checking purity of H2 is done by vendors.(reason i already mentioned in initial query)

3. I need to know is there H2 analyzers available for direct measurement for purity of hydrogen in Hydrogen generation plant?

1. If the process produces Hydrogen and Oxygen only the purity of the Hydrogen is defined by the leftover content of oxygen

2. purity of Hydrogen from process is 99.9% Vendor = The one generating it? Initial query was not clear

3. see 1. and I would use the one the "vendor" uses

Makes me wonder on pH sensors.

Ion of Hydrogen, but what, hydrogen can't be detected or do not have sensor capable of detecting it?

I guess Multi-Rae gas anlyzers has couple of analyzer for this.

I bet spectrometers could do this.

or Crouse Hind by Eaton gas analyzers made for hydrogen.

You might check with the Ontario Canada Nuclear Generation company as they cool the generators with pure hydrogen. Know sure why they col with hydrogen but I asked and no one knew the answer but they did know the safety requirements when working in those areas.

Various thermal power plants as well as combined cycle nowadays have Hydrogen generation plant.Below is typical schematic for the same.

Looks like GE has just the package that you're looking for, and you could follow their suggestion to have a second analyzer to back up the reading of the first one. Most other generator manufacturers probably have similar packages.
