“This is CR4” PSA series

05/19/2019 12:01 AM

We are launching a series of PSA-like announcements on CR4 to help educate both new and long-time users on the policies and practices of CR4. Over the next several weeks, keep an eye out for new announcements and posts. Some of the planned topics include: political posts and comments, reporting, thread and answer rating tools, community attitudes and posting and commenting best practices.

We want to cultivate a helpful, thoughtful community, which starts by eliminating condescending attitudes and off-topic discussions, and encouraging high-quality posts and replies.

Stay tuned for more This is CR4 announcements in the coming weeks.

I'm glad to see these things are up for discussion.

I especially agree on the need to eliminate condescending attitudes!

I frequently see something equivalent to RTFM!, when the critic has no idea whether the OP has access to a manual, whether that manual is written in a language the OP can read/understand, and occasionally, whether the manual is understandable to start with. I've seen quite a few manuals that looked like they were written in English, but they were translated from some other language by a person who did NOT have a complete understanding of spelling and word order in English, and thus produced a document not easily understood by a person fluent in English.

When someone purchases a piece of used equipment, they frequently have no manual, or the manual is faded, smudged, has missing pages, etc.

Finally, many devices come with a user's manual, but no service manual, so reading the available manual may well NOT answer many questions.

I am particularly interested who posts comments to these and the content of those comments.

I certainly like the idea of avoiding condescending comments.

A good technical explanation needs to be put over in an objective way to avoid offence - but so easy to evolve into an argument of opposing opinions where users rely on subjective comments to 'win' their case - and when they don't win - they start to belittle the opposition.

I recently re-read the site rules, and I noticed that there were more 'guidelines' for posting a question than there were for posting a reply. You might want to give that a once-over as well, to encourage new people to ask freely, and for others to answer politely.

We definitely plan to address that in one of our PSAs.
