Troublesome Fast Food Ads

Posted August 15, 2010 7:49 AM

Consumer health groups have complained about recent advertisements from a fast food chain that depicts attractive, bathing suit clad models eating giant cheeseburgers and relishing their taste. These products are laden with sodium, cholesterol, and high fats, say the consumer groups, and the public should be getting a warning about these foods, not an inducement to eat them. Cigarette advertising was banned for health reasons, so the consumer groups are questioning why not ban fast food ads? Unhealthy people put a burden on our healthcare system, so why put additional strain on it?

When people have to pay for THEIR OWN health care out of THEIR POCKETS, they will take better care of themselves. And if they don't take care of themselves, they "pay" for their own failures. We have to stop enabling poor behavior and decisions by spreading health care costs across the public in general and hiding the real costs of poor decisions. Harsh? Maybe. The bleeding hearts will wail, but if you want people to change, they have to be motivated. Survival is a hell of a motivator.

As long as cigarettes are legal, there should have never been a ban on their advertising regardless of how I personally feel about them. This trend of banning things for the "public good" is exactly the slippery slope we are talking about. What's next?
