When going to the dentist for a procedure that requires
labwork, like getting an impression taken for a crown, it is often a
multiple-appointment process. However, a dental practice in Sydney, Canada has
installed a CAD-CAM unit practice that allows for quick design and manufacture
of dental crowns.
The CAD-CAM unit uses a small, pen-shaped camera to create a
3D image of a patient's mouth. A restoration is generated on a screen based on
the image data and is then milled in a unit. According to a local new report,
the process takes less than 10 minutes.
This camera and software technology is also starting to be
used for other dental labwork applications, including the calculation of tooth
dimensions for the milling of replacement fillings, inlays, and outlays.
What other industries do you think would benefit from
CAD/CAM technology?
