CAD-CAM Unit Speeds up Dentistry

Posted January 07, 2011 7:45 AM by Sharkles

When going to the dentist for a procedure that requires labwork, like getting an impression taken for a crown, it is often a multiple-appointment process. However, a dental practice in Sydney, Canada has installed a CAD-CAM unit practice that allows for quick design and manufacture of dental crowns.

The CAD-CAM unit uses a small, pen-shaped camera to create a 3D image of a patient's mouth. A restoration is generated on a screen based on the image data and is then milled in a unit. According to a local new report, the process takes less than 10 minutes.

This camera and software technology is also starting to be used for other dental labwork applications, including the calculation of tooth dimensions for the milling of replacement fillings, inlays, and outlays.

What other industries do you think would benefit from CAD/CAM technology?

All I can say is that it is about time this type of technology has arrived in the Dental field!

My late dad, my uncle (retired), and my first cousin are or were Dentists, so I am particularly aware of the old methods of producing crowns, bridges etc etc etc.....slow beyond slow!

Hey, even my best friend is a Dental Lab technician, and after I showed him this posting this morning via URL Link he was totally blown away, literally! He responded "Well, there goes my job!"

I had this procedure a couple of years ago.

I was blown away that no blueprint or measurements were used by the "human" to make the precision part- no pesky math.

here is a link to a video of the cerec system that my dentist used. http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1128340/cerec_dental_cad_cam/ Milo
