After an 18-month delay, scientists have resumed what is called the world's largest fusion experiment at the Joint European Torus (JET). The magnetic fusion device tests materials that will be used inside the next-generation international experiment, ITER. Upgrades to this massive machine include an ITER-like wall featuring more heating power and additional diagnostic systems. Researchers use this equipment to determine the viability of fusion as a safe, clean, and virtually limitless energy source.
