Greener Aviation Needed to Reduce Global Pollution

Posted March 17, 2015 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

When someone refers to "emissions," you immediately think of automobiles and trucks, or perhaps power plants. Yet according to this piece, commercial aviation generates more greenhouse gases than all but six countries worldwide. And, if present trends continue, global greenhouse gas emissions will triple by 2050. This report from Engineering360 examines steps that the industry can take to reduce emissions, including modernizing aircraft fleets, adopting more direct flight routes, and researching cleaner propulsion technologies.

Polluting sea and skies should be prevented by UN rules signed by all countries.

BS, the UN should be disbanded and people who lament about pollution should DO SOMETHING to reduce it instead of pushing regulations through government agencies.

Regulations do not reduce pollution, they limit economic growth and innovation. Leave some of the tax money with the companies actually making stuff and they might have enough resources to hire some innovative engineer that can help reduce their emissions.

Instead the government taxes and taxes and taxes then it fines and fines and fines. What is a producer to do?

It is an attitude like that will keep your National GDP around $71 Billion annually. We had two guys in the US that earned more than that between the two of them.

Laws should be for protection of people, not stifling economies.

Well presented article, good compilation in brief & informative. Ultimately, rethinking on the concept of IC engines is the need of the hour. As long as need & scope are there technology will keep getting refined & improvised. Of course, aviation sector is the most needy followed by marine transport.

Designing high efficient PV panels and storage batteries will solve this.
