Bungee Away the Office Blues

Posted July 25, 2007 2:46 PM by TechnoTourist

Face it. The office is boring. So are you ready to get your blood flowing? Let's head out for an engineering adventure! The place to start is Queenstown, New Zealand, home of the magnificent Kawarau Bridge.

Good news. We're already there! Did you think you'd feel this good after traveling all the way to New Zealand? Well, just in case you're experiencing some jet lag, let's wake up with a little bungee jumping. After all, Queenstown is the home of this exciting, outdoor adventure and one amazing suspension bridge.

Nearly 20 years ago, the Kawarau Bridge became what one website has called "the first commercial site for bungee jumping". In 1988, A.J. Hackett and Henry van Asch applied for a license to use the long-neglected structure. During the 1960s, the old bridge had been replaced by a newer connection, the Battling Betty Bridge. Although miners had once used the Kawarau Bridge to travel from Queenstown to Central Otago, the gold rush of the 1880s was long over.
The license that Hackett and van Asch received brought new life into an old structure. An avid bungee jumper, Hackett eagerly added the Kawarau Bridge to his list of leaps which included the Eiffel Tower. Since 1988, bungee jumpers have made breathtaking descents from the Kawarau Bridge, a 100-year old structure which hovers 43 m above the Kawarau River.

So are you ready to wake up with some bungee jumping? Did I mention that the Kawarau Bridge is the only place in Queenstown, the home of bungee jumping, which offers the "water touch option?" Here, you can customize your bungee jumping adventure by choosing whether or not you'd like to be completely or partially immersed in water during your jump. (Hey, it's been said that splashing some water on your face helps you to wake up!) The choice is yours. Let's go for an adrenaline ride or two before bouncing back to reality.

Next Stop…. Deep Down Under to the Great Barrier Reef

Some people see old, neglected structures. Others, like Hackett and van Asch, see business opportunities. Three cheers for the visionaries!
