Concrete Concert Hall Debuts in Veracruz

Posted August 27, 2015 12:00 AM by Engineering360 eNewsletter

With Veracruz fast becoming a ground zero of Mexico's artistic cultural expression, a new concert hall is being constructed that will not only house the Boca Del Rio Philharmonic Orchestra, it will also serve as a rejuvenating centerpiece to the otherwise depressed area. Consisting of three separate but connected concrete cubes, the Faro Boca Concert Hall will house close to 1,000 concert patrons. Said to be a focal point of the city's new commitment to artistic diversity, the facility can also be adapted easily as a theater and dance performance venue.

Mexico has a strong heritage in the performing arts, both music and dance. Just to brag, my wife (next to me in my avatar) Rosa Maria Flores Saldaña [Roxana Flores] was in her younger years, a performing member of the Ballet Folklorico at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City.

I'm not in agreement for the site location and materials used for this concert hall.

From a Site Engineering POV, it sits too low in elevation in relation to the water level and breakwater. And the breakwater located tight up against the building facade? During storm surges, I full expect it to be flooded and/or be heavily damaged by the wave action.

Frankly, I would have raised the First Floor at least several more Meters upwards. I sure hope that there isn't a basement and elevator pit in this building, as they're going to experience seepage and flooding problems.

Ahhh, Architects.....never mind, but you get my drift.
