Talkin' ‘Bout My Generation

Posted December 10, 2007 8:24 AM

There is some fear that a "brain-drain" is underway as more executives reach retirement age. For example, executive development firm RHR International predicts that half of all companies will lose half of their senior managers by 2010. Not only that, but three-quarters of these companies believe their current crop of younger managers won't be able to step in. My own experience is that younger managers have all the enthusiasm and smarts that they their seniors had, and will do fine. What do you think?

What will hurt the most is the loss in experience of the retirees. It will be a rough ride as the new management goes through the learning curve.

What I notice the most between the old and new way of things is the work ethics / attitude are not the same. The new generation of managers has more deligation and not enough actual hands on experience in what they are managing. They never actually got thier hands dirty on the way up...

Start at the top and work sideways.

I believe they have the CAPABILITY to do fine. That is no guarantee that any one of them WILL. But since we're talkin' 'bout MY generation too, please recall the song by the Kingston Trio - "...they're goin' to the dogs, you can see it more and more, 'specially on a Saturday night!" There were more than a few of US who probably wouldn't have got betting odds that we'd ever amount to a can of spinach when we first started out, either.
