Hoover Dam Construction Remembered

Posted November 04, 2006 9:00 AM

It was the largest construction project of its kind – 725 ft high, 1244 ft wide, 660 ft thick at its base. The great Hoover Dam took four years and $165 million to build. Employing six of the country's largest construction firms, the dam was begun in March 1931 and completed ahead of schedule on September 10, 1935. All totaled, a staggering 4.4 million cubic yards of concrete were utilized in the construction. In the end, the dam provided more than 4 billion kilowatt hours for California, Nevada and Arizona.
