Common Purposes

What are the Common Purposes? I've dwelt on that question since first reading my alma mater's founding principle "for the purposes of instructing persons, who may choose to apply themselves, in the application of science to the common purposes of life". The question, more than any answer I may ever offer, has guided me through many personal and professional endeavors. And, if I have learned anything it is that I have derived my greatest joy when I, as part of a team, have made a lasting difference to improve the lives of others. Should the thoughts I share here and the ensuing discussion lead others to ask the same question, to seek their own answers and to experience the same joy as I, then I shall consider this effort of value.

The Moonbeam Song by Harry Nilsson

Posted January 31, 2008 12:01 PM by MillMatt

Today's morning commute included the following song by Harry Nillson that I had never heard before. I enjoyed and appreciated his observations and hope you may, too.

HAVE YOU EVER WATCHED A MOONBEAM
AS IT SLITHER CROSS YOUR WINDOW-PANE?
OR STRUGGLE WITH A BIT OF RAIN?
OR DANCE ABOUT THE WEATHERVANE?
OR SETTLE ON A MOVING TRAIN AND WONDER WHERE THE TRAIN'S BEEN?

OR ON A FENCE WITH BITS OF CRAP AROUND IT'S BOTTOM,
BLOWN THERE BY WINDBEAM?
WHO SEARCHES FOR THE MOONBEAM
WHO WAS LAST SEEN LOOKING AFTER TRACKS OF THE CARELESS WINDBEAM?
MOVIN' TO THE TRACKS OF THE TIRELESS FREIGHT TRAIN,
THEN LIGHTING UP THE SITE OF THE WEATHERVANE
AND THE BITS OF RAIN, AND THE WINDOW-PANE,
AND THE EYES OF THOSE WHO THINK THEY SAW IT HAPPEN.

Harry is the best. And if anyone is asking themselves what the point is Whale- lets sea everything has a point so eye must have one too, a point in every direction is the same as no point at all, and the distance between the land of point and the pointless forest is directly proportional to the amount of time it takes to sing a song--

There is nothing pointless about this gig- the thing is you sea what you want to sea and you hear what you want to here, have you ever seen New Delhi? .....Paris?

I'm ready to go anywhere, I'm ready for to fade,

Into my own parade, cast your dancing spell my way, I promise to go under it.
