Micro-sizing MRIs

Posted March 07, 2008 8:59 AM

MRI machines are huge and expensive, but a tiny, sensitive sensor does the same job on a micro-scale. A super-sensitive mini-sensor detects nuclear magnetic resonance in fluid samples flowing through a novel microchip. The technique has potential for chemical sensing in medical and industrial applications. How would you use this tool?

Geologists might be able to use this tool to discern porosity, grain sizes, etc with the mini-nmr tool. Schlumberger has a similar logging tool they drop down into an open hole well. Geologists might be able to use this tool at the outcrop with a data logger or laptop computer.
