Saving Energy Can Be (Order) Fulfilling

Posted April 11, 2008 8:28 AM

Energy efficiency has become one of the top ten considerations in order fulfillment operations. This industry white paper presents distributors and warehouse managers with a series of questions to consider when streamlining their operations. Why run conveyors at full speed if there's no need? Why run them at all during slow periods? Slower operation can also prolong equipment life. Have you taken steps to save energy in your conveyor systems? Do you have the controls in place that would enable you to do so?

I'm surprised the article didn't mention gravity conveyors. Gravity conveyors don't require any power and when properly set up can provide excellent results. They may not be the best choice for a production line but they can efficiently get materials and loads from one area to another without nearly as much human input. Here's some more setup guidelines for gravity conveyors.

I was working for a Conveyor Manufacturer as a consultant, identifying design aspects that influence power consumption of a particular industrial line of conveyors. Looking to be part of an energy conscious movemnet, they decided to begin quantifying how certain factors influence power consumption; factors that their sales people and clients take for granted and do not realize their long-term costs.
