Can You Assure a Successful Outsource?

Posted August 25, 2008 8:25 AM

Asking another company to build your products requires a considerable amount of trust. Their versions of your products have to conform to your design specifications. The contractor has to deliver them on time and within budget — and they have to work. Verifying processes and testing products is not enough. You have to explore the culture of the contractor to be sure that their goals and priorities match your own. So, how do you search for a partner? Do you select different contractors for different products? How do you make that decision? Has your outsourcing experience affected the way that you look for and manage your contractors?

The preceding article is a "sneak peek" from Test & Measurement, a newsletter from GlobalSpec. To stay up-to-date and informed on industry trends, products, and technologies, subscribe to Test & Measurement today.

Just like any other contractor give them a little after all the legal paper work is done and see how they do then increase a little until you postive they can handel the load. But keep a close eye on them with spot checks and constant Quality Control checks.

Assure no, but you can severly minimize your risk. If you have a well definined product (drawings) you supplier's have no choice but to make the parts and product that you want. If they don't you may have delays in your product launch, but at least your not paying for the failure (and retooling) that cause your delay. Our world and the global economy would quickly grind to a halt if we couldn't outsource some work. In part because no company can afford to be the technical expert in all the technology they need. Airplanes need hydraulics, materials engineering, electical systems, mechanical systems, ergonomic features, etc. Neither Boeing nor Airbus hold the industrial leading position in all theses areas, but they can define the parameters of there needs clearly and in no uncertain terms such that their suppliers are forced to provide acceptable components.
