Gmail’s Intoxicated Email Protection

Posted October 09, 2008 12:00 AM by Kaplin

I'm sure you've all heard of the terms "Beer Goggles" or "Drunk Dialing" before. Well, Google Labs has taken precautions to protect their users from making the same mistake online. A new feature available for Gmail users, called "Mail Goggles", can be set-up to make sure you aren't sending out drunken emails you will later forget. At first glance this story seems to be a joke, but I assure you it's not.

Gmail Labs
By clicking on the Settings link at the top right of your Gmail account, you will see a tab on the left that says "Labs". On this tab are all sorts of experimental features that Google engineers have developed. Some are very similar to Firefox Add-ons , others change the look and feel or your Gmail inbox, and some – such as the Mail Goggles –increase your security settings.

The features offered by Gmail Labs can change at any time, with new ones popping up or current ones disappearing – so don't get too attached to your favorite oddball feature.

Mail Goggles
When Mail Goggles is activated, you will be forced to complete a series of five math problems within a minute to send out your email. The default times for Mail Goggles is Friday and Saturday nights from 10pm until 4am, but you can set it to any day or time you wish; you can even set the difficulty level of the math questions.

On my first try with Mail Goggles, I answered all five questions correctly in about 30 seconds. Once you correctly answer the questions, you can then send as many emails as you want for 15 minutes without having to answer more math problems. I changed the difficulty setting to five and retried. This time I rushed a little bit and got one of the questions wrong. If you don't answer correctly you will be given a whole new set of problems to complete. This can be very frustrating if you are trying to send an email in a sober state-of-mind.

This new feature has generated a lot of attention already, whether it's really useful has yet to be determined. Productivity wise, Mail Goggles is a nightmare, but it's not meant to be used in an office setting. I can also see it getting annoying at home if you have to send a few emails at night, but anyone who has ever made this sort of mistake are probably wishing they had this feature years ago.

What do you think? Does this feature have any practical use or is it just a headline grab by Google to promote their Google Labs features?

At first I also thought it was a joke, but sure enough, this feature is an option! Since I still need to do basic math on my fingers this is not a tool for me. (I made it through Calculus just fine with the help of my calculator, but math in my head - forget it.) I agree, though, this could be a useful tool in some situations. It will be interesting to see if a similar application comes out for Facebook where a message is posted on a friend's wall with just the enter key.

I browsed some of the other Labs features while I was checking out "Mail Goggles", and added the "Mark as read" button. You'd think that feature would come standard, but now I can quickly click a button instead of navigate a dropdown to mark items as read.

This only helps if you're too faced to Start>Run>Calc.

Unfortunately for me, my arithmetic skills improve with blood alcohol content.

I don't think that this feature is very practical. While I have never heard of drunk emailing-I am sure there are people that do it accidentally. But this is pending they can correctly boot up their computer, log in without forgetting their password and having it lock you out, pick the right application or site for emailing, remember the password there, type a message and send it, without forgetting a person to send it to. My guess is that a drunk wouldn't have the attention span past step two.

I think you are underestimating some people...drunk people have a lot to say and are often determined to be heard!

Access, even for a drunk person can be easy. A lot of people leave their computers on 24-7 and choose to save their passwords. This is such a funny topic, but I think it's pretty relevant. I have a friend who becomes attached to her cellphone when she's drinking. Sometimes she will call or text everyone in her phonebook... but the next day she wishes she hadn't. It's probably not much different with email...There are lots of people that choose to let their thoughts and emotions flow after a few drinks, and sometimes that can lead to trouble (e.g. Emailing a flame email to someone who put them down, broke up with them, etc.)

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"

If you know that you usually do that when you are drunk, don't get drunk.

Maybe CR4 should have a similar test prior to allowing a person to post, this might cut down on some of the questions/answers that are posted here - surely some of the people must be hammered to post such stupid questions/ answers

This is just an optional feature that you have to go into the settings and turn on for it be active. No one is being forced to use it or getting it turned on for them automatically.

I still think it's meant more of as a gimmick to call attention to their other Labs features. (Some of which can be useful)

The politicial correction police will complain about this system. They will more than likely insist that they should be allowed to send the email if they at least score a C+ on the test or be allowed to take the test at least 3 times.
