It makes sense that charging electric vehicles could be profitable for electric utility companies. But there is potential conflict. EV owners are more likely to also embrace solar panels, and power companies do NOT want to lose customers to them and they do NOT want to buy power from them. My local power companies and co-ops are walking the tight wire over this - they want the public to perceive them as friendly to alternative energy, but they don't want to see it really succeed. So they donate a public charging station here or there, but they also make it extremely difficult for customers to connect their solar systems to the grid.
