Re: Mazda Revives the Rotary Engine - As a Range Extender

Having been the owner of an early RX2, I have always appreciated the small size and high power output it can produce. I am sure that the apex seal problems have been largely solved. By using the engine at a constant speed, it can be tuned for minimal CO, NOX, and HC emissions. By choosing a speed that is near the beginning of its maximum torque curve, the wear it will have can be controlled. If it is used as a "range extender", I suggest that it can be incorporated into a vehicle with a range of 600+ miles without any external recharging. If used for a long trip, the inevitable stops for rest, meals, and personal needs can be time for the engine to partially or completely recharge the battery.

Go for it!
