The utilization of Pt makes the process expensive. I hope that Pt is not lost during electrodes cleaning.

This is odd. I remember from high school that mercury readily forms amalgams with all common metals except iron and platinum. I also recall that to form an amalgam with iron you use electrolysis. Could iron be used instead of platinum?
