This is an extremely misleading article title that renewable energy enemies love to quote. The caveat is conveniently buried in the middle of the article "compared with using solar panels without storage". Where is the link to the University of Texas at Austin paper? Storing energy, in any form, will never be 100% efficient. Were the storage inefficiency CO2 calculations compared to fast but dirty energy resources like diesel generators or gas turbines? Many benefits related to distributed energy storage are not included in this article:

  1. Distributed energy storage can be used for grid services like demand response, volt/var compensation, and replace more expensive and dirty resources.
  2. It can be used to mitigate the "duck curve" and reduce the need for utilities to spin up expensive and inefficient power sources like diesel generators during high demand and sparse solar periods.
  3. Distributed energy resources, in the long run, will increase the reliability and security of the grid.

Narrow... I wonder if the article and study were funded by fossil fuel based centralized energy advocates?
