We can't ignore the possibility that the methane comes from natural seeps or old, abandoned oil wells that were improperly capped or have rusted out casings. The next step is surveys with high resolution spectrographic cameras tuned for methane detection to identify the individual sources. It's a good opportunity for commercial drone operators.

Open-air burning (flaring) of gas is a waste of energy, and is often dirty and inefficient It seems more reasonable to develop small methane-fueled electrical generators to dispose of the gas with some profit.
