If it is ready-to-eat at the 'factory', would that fruit survive the trip to the retail store?

One person's ripe is another person's green.

Buy green. Better to ripen at home where you can readily monitor the fruit for your desired level of ripeness.

Once the avocado ripens, place it in the crisper drawer in your fridge to 'hold' it, until you are ready to eat it. Keeps at least a week longer that way. If they start to get little brown spots in the flesh, make guacamole.

With the price of avocado's being over a buck each, I don't let those suckers go to waste.

It would be a major contribution to the field of science if someone could develop a way to preserve avocados. I've tried many ways and none are worth using.

I imagine it's not "ready to eat" at the factory but a few days away from that.

I also imagine that a future hand held device might make it into produce markets or consumers with settings for a variety of produce that softens towards optimum ripeness.
