Could repurposed oil rigs be used as a mounting for windmills? If windmills could not be dense enough per area, it may not be worth it. The horizontal load from the windmills would produce a shear load in the legs, leading to a moment in the legs as well as an overturning moment for the whole assembly. What kind of loads are oil platforms designed for??

Alternatively, maybe an array of solar panels? They certainly wouldn't be shaded by trees!
