Flywheels called 'synchronous condensers' are being installed in Ireland to enable 80% of the electricity supplied to come from wind and solar generation. Currently (sorry) they provide some short term frequency stablisation and power to match varying loads, but as the tech develops longer storage durations should become possible. Overnight storage should become interesting for solar as the panel costs have fallen a lot. Wind output often continues at night when loads fall away. A long lasting storage solution could store energy for the next day. e.g. For datacentre power and cooling.
