Given the presence of many microclimates within a weather-forecasting area, a very local weather station could be very helpful. I didn't realize until very recently that Weather Underground has a network of weather stations like those described in this article. I live on a small lake, a few hundred feet higher than the closest "big town" (a village with a population of about 2K), and our weather is often different. If someone would put up a weather station in our microclimate I'd have a better idea what to expect when I get down the hill.

For example, a few years ago a terrible ice storm knocked out village power for nearly a week. Within a few miles of our house, roads were NOT good ... yet those of us a little higher up only had rain.

Interesting article, thanks.
