Venice Lagoon has been a location fir research in water quality issues for over 50 years. Studies in the ecosystems of the Lagoon(s) date back to massive overfishing of the area resulting "harvesting down the food chains untill the ecosystem was virtually destroyed.
introduction/enhancement of new species of shellfish (Tapes phillipinarum) and Crasostrea gigas) allowed recovery with selective secondary feeders. Examination of the circulation of the Adriatic by Gabriel Csanady and Benoit Cushman-Roisin, et Al (2001) and earlier work dating into the 1960's lead Dr. Eng Francesco Paesanti and others to a recover ecosystem after disastrous eutrophication blue-green algal mats 10's of centimeters thick and kilometers wide desceded on nearby beaches in the 1980's... so this is follow on, nothing new!
