I have a very broad education making me a 'jack of all trades, master of none' type. Most of my engineering knowledge is self-taught with some limited formal training to allow me to work in the engine room of ships. I currently have a Canadian 4th class (motor) engineering certificate, and spent some time working on offshore oil and gas support vessels. I also have a degree in business administration with a major in aquatic resources from St. Francis Xavier University in Canada (www.stfx.ca). I spent the last year trying out a shore position and exercising my university training. I was working with large Canadian fishing company where I was the manager of a large factory freezer trawler. I was recently laid off and decided to take advantage of my time between jobs to do some research.
I find working as a marine engineer interesting because of the wide range of complex systems found on modern ships. I find it challenging because of the need for self-reliance and to be competent in the basics of most engineering disciplines. Not that I consider myself competent in any of them but I'm only thirty years old and motivated.
Currently I live in Nova Scotia, on the East Coast of Canada. I'm about an hour from Halifax in a small seaside community called Chester.
