Biography

Ken is a P. Eng with a BASC (73) and MASc (76) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo.

His graduate work was funded by AECL and Ken studied the impact wear of Zircaloy reactor materials. He designed, helped build and operated the wear test rig.

In 1976 joined Ontario Hydro Design & Development as member of a high tech support group for rotating equipment. Work was on all phases of power station operation and on various equipment. Ken specialized in bearings, seals, lubrication and rotor dynamics.

In 1993 Ken left as a part of voluntary separation downsizing and formed Utility Service Associates. They provide tech support, fluid testing, failure analysis and tribological products to power stations worldwide.

For EPRI he prepared their 2002 "Electrohydraulic Control (EHC) Fluid Maintenance Guide" and has just finished a second EPRI report on EHC fluid elastomer compatibility.

Lube products he helped develop include VSG biodegradable grease for hydroelectric stations as well as MOV Long Life and MOV Extra grease for valve actuators.

Ken has given numerous presentations and papers. He was Vice Chair of the NRC Associate Committee on Tribology and on IEC and ISO committees for steam turbine lube oil and control fluids.

For the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers Ken a Fellow, Toronto Section Chair twice, Chair of the Power Generation Council and on the Board of Directors. In 2004 he was awarded the STLE P.M. Ku Award for meritorious service. This is only given to one person a year.
