Encrypted Duplex Headsets Needed

04/03/2015 11:48 AM

Our lab test facilities have been experiencing problems with our Plantronics encrypted headsets for years. The worst experiences have been (1) excessive, infrequent and unexpected static that prevents hearing and talking and (2) dropouts whenever the headset is a large distance (> 300 ft) from the antennae or when the headset is used on the other side of test frame steel.

What experience do you have with alternatives?

Our headsets requirements are for wireless, encrypted, duplex communication over distances of up to 500 ft where large amounts of structural steel are used.

A little more info please.

  • What model are they?
  • How old?
  • Replaceable or rechargeable batteries?

"Up to 500 feet" includes 300 feet.

Plantronics lists range under ideal conditions and unless you specify the worst case of operation you will have and then add some extra performance you may never be happy.

More than likely the frequency that the headsets are operating at is being encroached by other wireless RF, SONAR, or RADAR devices broadcasting in the area and/or the signal strength is suffering DB losses from low wattage or a damaged, poorly tuned, or wrong antennae.

Noise from plasma cutters, VFD's, and other static producing equipment may be present.

I would use an oscilloscope and radio frequency monitoring equipment to identify the cause and correct the issues if possible.

If the cause(s) cannot be addressed cost effectively, I would suggest replacing the system however you will still need to find out if there is significant frequency and/or noise generating equipment so that the new equipment can be tuned/adapted to ignore or filter the interference out of the signal.

I bought a Sonetics system a few months ago and it works great.

What type of lab? Are you dealing with excessive amounts of radiated RF radiation that could interfere with the band the headsets are working on for example?

It is a Structural Test lab. We utilize hydraulic actuators for loads controls. Very few VFDs in the immediate area (within 300 ft).

Adjacent to the lab is a Vibrations lab with large vibration tables. These could certainly produce large amounts of radiated noise. However, the shielding around this lab appears to be sufficient as the interference problems that we have do not correlate to use of the Vibrations lab.
