You just bumped into this and its not of real relevance for your income you say?

Well here is a link to read.

http://www.siracertification.com/atex.aspx

It would make sense to get familiar with the certification details.

Wiki is a good source too.

If you just research a while longer you might find things like this.

Feel free to digest and ask additional questions.

Sooooooo....... You just tripped over a job at a refinery and don't know what the regulations are?

Talk to the SAFETY MANAGER, they will give you a book about 6" thick that you need to know to work there!

Don't let this happen!!

Does the gas filter in question even need to be certified? I don't know given the limited information provided.

Have you tried an internet search for suitable filter manufacturers and ATEX certification?

In addition probably a good idea to get a hold of the applicable hazardous area standard relating to the equipment in question (again not sure exactly which one you need). A quick search on one of the standards websites (IEC?) should help.

Otherwise contact a hazardous area inspector or suitable filter supplier and ask them what they think.

Oh, and don't try and perform the selection and/or installation work if you are not suitably qualified. Unpleasant things could result (such as nasty legal things).

Quick google found some Atex certified filters. So not sure why you couldn't find any....

Anyhow, whether or not a component like a filter needs to be Atex certified is, apparently, a gray area if you read into it a bit more. (OP can read I'm sure...)

So, if in doubt go for the certified filter or get one that isn't and $pend the time to get it certified..

Not sure where your personal responsibility starts or ends but I would never consider accepting the risk and liability associated with not installing any device in a class 1 div 1 that does not meet the applicable code requirements.

If the code requirements are not clear and concise I would opt for the highest safety rated device(s) available.

A brief internet search yielded that there are multiple ATEX certified filters available.
