Diamond Heads

07/13/2007 8:57 AM

Has anyone used the Diamond Heads process on their engines cooling fins? I have done this to dozens of engines and finally had a set of cylindes ruined by them. They were EXTREMELY uncooperative with the situation..........

Fortunately,no, im not really a fan of how it looks, but what did they do? I have had fins repaired before by a buddy of mine when an s&s cylinder took a dive off a bench.

Well, they cut the edges of the cooling fins in a unique way that sparkles. They use a diamond cutting tool, thus the name. When you call and ask if any other machining need be done, like resizing of the cylinders, they say "Absolutely not!" I sent them a set of customers cylinders and heads off of an S&S 111. They came back .007" larger! Apparently this idiot does not understand simple physics. When you remove material from a metal object it weakens the object and changes the stresses in it. Especially something made from aluminum alloy that has been heat cycled a hundred times!.......DUH!

S&S is resizing the cylinders and providing oversize pistons at their expense. I have also been provided with the understanding that they (Diamond Heads) also have been "resized"!!! The guys at S&S are good dudes!

They simply resized the cylinders and made them "round" again. Not a real big deal but they seemed to want to make a big deal out of it. I am too busy to play games! Fix it, .........who's next!?!?!?!

You can increase the surface area of the cooling fins by sandblasting with Silicon Carbide or black beauty about 16-20 grit size at low pressures to create a rough porofile on the fins. This has been found to get an effective cooling of the cylinder upto five times the size of the fins. Try this it is inexpensive and it works!!! You can also metal spray it with Aluminum at low pressures resulting in a similar surface roughness to give you the same effect without reducing the thickness of the fins.

Good luck

Do you cut them yourself? I have heard of alot of problems of damages with no help of a solution. Would like to talk more to you about this. Susan e-mail is softtail1@aol.com
