Hot Dip Galvanizing - Not cool really

07/13/2007 12:24 PM

Hi there,

I am working on Spiral Freezer project & using galvanising mild steel sheet. I've to calculate flat size of section made by sheet (for cnc punching). But I've to consider galvaniising as well.

What is thickness of galvanizing coat & on what factor it depends. Any web links for good information.

The galvanizing will only be a few thousandths of an inch depending on the corrosion resistance rating. The ASTM spec will give you the exact amount. I can give you more detail later, I think it's ASTM A-36.

The thickness of the galvanizing will depend on the class of coating and the application process. For example, it is common to purchase mild steel sheets for fabrication that are galvanized, galvannealed, or electro-galvanized as received. The requirements (including thickness) for galvanized and galvannealed sheets are covered in ASTM A525 while those for electro-galvanized sheets is covered in ASTM A591.

I would think the galvanizing thickness is covered by your purchase specification for the material or by the thickness requirements on the fabricated, finished product.
