For buying purposes:

LCD - Its reliability is very good. Its power usage is low. Its picture quality is not considered as bright as the plasma display but is getting better rapidly.

see http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/lcd.htm for details on specific functions

Plasma - Its reliability is low. the power usage is very high. The picture quality is very good.

see http://www.howstuffworks.com/plasma-display.htm for details on specific functions

Plasma or LCD TV?

Both types of "New Technology" TVs are extremely poor quality relative to previous color TVs (1980's-90' 25 yr lifespan). They are made as "Disposable" units with 3-7yr lifespan. Extremely reliable for the first 12-18 months, then LCD displays become fragile and plastic within Plasma displays discolor from heat. Boards in both TVs usually have poor quality thin-film components (capacitors) with limited life if near any heat source (heat sinks on ICs, etc.).

The only advantages offered by Plasma TVs over LCD are:

1. Plasma TVs are easier to view in a "bright" room

2. Plasma TVs produce enough heat to dry damp socks (drying wet socks may be dangerous because of dripping into the TV).
