Yes, Virginia - there is antimatter.

The noted typist Dan Brown wrote another book, who'd have thought?

I read his other effort, something about a code. I don't think I'm a book snob, but it was cliche'd rubbish (unless of course, it was an ironic take on modern bestsellers). Jeff

Yes, Primavera...

The antimatter is as real as the matter itself... It is observed in so many experiments that took place during the 20th century (till now)... And its existence is globaly accepted from all the scientists without any doubt...

The only question is why the antimatter in the universe is so rare... The matter in the universe dominate while the antimatter appears occasionally in some special cases (i.e. in an "accelarator of particles")... There is no obvious reason why the universe consists, essentially, only from matter (as the antimatter could exist, also, as well)... The dominant theory claims that during the birth of the Universe (shortly after the Bing Bang) almost equal quantities of matter and antimatter were produced... "almost" means that the quantity of the matter was slightly larger than that of the antimatter (we don't know exactly why)... Then the matter and antimatter were mutually canceled (producing radiation, i.e. photons) and only the small surplus of the matter remained... So our universe is consisted by this "small surplus" of the remained matter...

I thought it was the creation of Gene Roddenbury in STAR TREK as it seems like Star Trek material. Also it could have been a brain child of a good scientist gone bad.

Does it matter whether it is there or not? How does it come in the picture during our lives? I did not understand it at all. (I need explanation in laymen's term). Is there any one kind enough to please expand on it?

There are certain radioactive isotopes that decay by emitting positrons. Positron Emission Tomography is a medical procedure. So I would say it does matter, at least as far as the existence of subatomic anti matter.

Thank you, Guest.

This Saturday, I am going to see my doctor for my persisting back pain and I will ask him (if he knew) about this medical procedure you mentioned and I shall report back to you on Monday if he knew about it or he is also as ignorant as I was about this matter (actually anti-matter).

When you have a question, WIKI always has the answer.

wiki is great.

But watch out some people edit wiki for less that honest reasons.

I know people who will edit wiki to win a stupid petty argument on a forum.

After that I don't trust wiki as much anymore.

Some people will write bald faced lies into wiki to convince other people that they are right.

One practical use of anti matter is the medical proceedure, Positron Emission Tomography.

Hallo, Nadeem... It's not always necessary for the scientific knowledge to be applicable... In the same manner why do we care what "Quasars" are???... or what is the physics of a black hole???...or how the Universe is created???... There are so many scientific fields and issues that don't have a direct consequence in our daily life... But the scientific curiosity and the search of the truth are self-existent... We are trying to find how the Nature is working...We wonder about the "world" and "ourselves"... And that's the main difference between humans and animals... And, afterall, you never know what practical applications and uses would appear from a theoretical (and apparent irrelevant) study...

Thanks, GK;

Sorry for delay in responding you.

You are right. We never know about any thing how it will or will not affect our daily lives. The things you mentioned are our only imaginations and some of them I read about or watch and I say, OK it is because of some geniouses or idiots with too much time on their hands. Anti-matter? I am not anti Anti-matter but only curious to know if there is such thing? If people say there is, I will say, OK so there it is and not in my life to worry about.

Regards;

Nadeem

I live within a stone's throw of Fermilab, currently the world's most powerful accelerator site. The huge underground collider at Fermilab uses anti-matter every day - specifically, it uses anti-protons. Collecting and storing anti-matter is no trivial task!

Of course it exists. We lived in a world of duality: if something is up, then, something must be down, or in others words, if something is "positive", something must be "negative" to balance the equation Why it works in this way? I don't know, but just happens. Think about it...

I'm not sure how far you can take this idea. So far there's no evidence for anti-gravity, anti-mass, or anti-time.

So what does thsi picture mean? I reckon it is like day and night difference between matter and anti-matter.

Hi Nadeem,

That is the symbol for Yin and Yang: They have meaning of the unity of opposites; hot/cold, dark/light, love/hate, strong/weak, etc....

Read about it here.

-John

Thanks Johjohn:

Now I fully understand. It is just like Toothfairy, Easter Bunny, Old Christmas Santa and Black hole and Elvis aive somewhere with John Kennedy and some educated people trying to Impeach Bush and Chaney for their true crimes and lies and cheating.

Hello Butt,

I'm glad you now fully understand. The world will surely be a better place now.
