Grid Paper + Lined Paper = Doane Paper

07/19/2007 10:40 AM

What a clever idea:

I would have found this paper incredibly useful in college. I had certain classes that required lined paper and others that required grid.

Link to Doane Paper and a link to where you can download a piece of your own.

This is very similar to Green Engineering Paper, commonly known as GEP. When I was in college, all of our work was done on this paper, which had the darker more solid lines horizontally so you could write on them, but also had the fainter grid so you could draw various diagrams, scatter plots, etc. Went through reams of the stuff for everything from Intro to Engineering classes to Thermodynamics to Machine Elements to......well, let's just say I used a lot of it! Commonly available in University bookstores.

Ha!

One of my engineer's foibles which I inherited from my Dad...wherever I work I always get the to buy 'quadrille' pads for me. (5mm squared) Brilliant for drawing circuits, logic levels, binary numbers and doodling.

We need our little eccentricities! And I do love a good foible.

Del

A little history. We used quadrille paper a lot before the advent of computerized drafting and layouts. But as computer drafting (CAD) increased in industry and schools, quadrille paper sales fell off and stores stopped ordering the stuff (at least in this area).

Last Friday I spent most of a morning looking for a 30" X 40" pad of quarter inch grid quadrille to lay out a 1/4'=1 foot patio and garden. I chose that size for the convenience of the elderly gentleman who was helping me.

On my shopping tour I got a lot of blank stares and shrugged shoulders from clerks at places such as Office Depot, Paper Plus and other stationary and paper supply houses.

I finally found a store which catered to architechs and the price for two sheets was for fifty cents each. Not much of a bargain since as late as ten years ago one could but a thirty sheet pad for $4.95.

Quadrille has many uses as others have pointed out in this discussion. One doesn't always have access to a computer with Autocad (or equivalent) and a printer.

Did you try asking if they stocked foibles?

Oh Del ! I already have an abundance of foibles but perhaps your implication that I could use more is inspiring. I'll go shopping today....

Funny how for some tasks you can't beat a pencil and paper...it's still much quicker tan CAD? I think the garden layout is a prime example.

Any other winners in the pencil vs CAD race (and just don't say scratch your nose anyone ...ok)?
