RFID and the individual consumer: Is it possible?

07/19/2007 1:51 PM

I am new to this forum and have very little RFID knowledge. But, I have a project idea and believe that the knowledge in this forum can help me.

What is the probability of using RFID reader/tag in the individual consumer arena? Almost like the devices used to find lost keys, I would like to tag personal items of a test group and distribute individual reader to each person. I would wrap the objects and place them throughout a room. The test group individuals would roam around them room. And, when they get within 2 - 3 feet of the item, the reader will notify them with no interference from the other tags or readers. My goal is to have the device that the patron is holding react, instead of the tagged item.

Even with this plan, I have a few questions.

  1. Can the size of an RFID reader be equivalent to a car alarm remote?
  2. Can proximity be limited to such a small range?
  3. What's the possibility of having no interference among the readers?
  4. Is it economically feasible to use RFID in this situation?
  5. Is there a better way of accomplishing this?

Thanks for you feedback.

1) yes

2) yes

3) RFID operates on a serial number basis, so there's no interference.

4) define economically feasible

5) probably. And what do you do if you lose the reader?

Just like in business, you don't want to invest more than what the market will bear. I don't want to pay over $30 for each reader/tag combination.

Also, I did not think about misplacement, or even the swapping of readers. The outcome in this situation would be to resort to human measures---opening the remaining packages to find the item. What prompted you to ask this question?

Since you answered yes to the first two questions, any suggestions on where to start? I would like to wrap my mind around this concept by developing or purchasing a reader/tag kit for myself, before moving on to a larger group.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge...

Sounds like a high tech version of a scavenger hunt!

Systems like this are already in place all over the world. http://www.pdcorp.com/healthcare/rfid_products.html

If The Beast can find my car keys, I'm all for it.

RFID can be much, much smaller than a car alarm remote. It can be (and is) as small as the dot on the "i" in Gillette. There is an RFID expert, a PhD in marketing from Harvard, who has a daily broadcast on WE THE PEOPLE RADIO NETWORK, http://www.wtprn.com/ which streams live on the web.

You can call her show and talk to an expert about RFID.

He had asked if the READER could be as small as a car alarm remote, not the RFID tag!

Read, people, READ!

1 the reader is small the probum is the antena to get the distance you need a larger antena to recive/transmit the signal power

2 range limited to power /antana size
