What Is This?

09/16/2015 6:26 AM

I found this while hiking around some rocks and brush in central Africa. The other pictures didn't come out so well but there is a small hole (about 2-3mm)at the lower end and it appeared that the fine grass or stems of something were protruding out at an angle. It was impressive miniature basket weaving. Just wanted to know if anyone had seen these before and knew what magnificent creature built it.

Only thing I've seen like it is the case of a caddisfly larva. Never as neatly constructed, tho'. Some of the images in this search are vaguely similar:

That was my first reaction too. I've seen them with light brown coloured tubes around their bodies - made from what, I do not know. Also some use pieces of gravel stuck together to build a suit of amour. Fiendishly clever and done with a brain the size of a pinhead. Nature is truly marvelous.

I agree that this is likely an insect case for a complete metamorphosis transformation. I suspect a moth or butterfly of some kind. Nature's engineering is truly impressive. You should look for an African entomology web site or forum to get this identified.

Possibly a bag worm. That one sure had some skill. Most I've seen are not that neatly put together.

Interesting thing is Caddisfly larvae don't make them to pupate - they make them to live in, in the same way a snail uses its shell.

There must be a very uniform building material at hand for such a uniform cocoon....probably some species of bagworm...

BAGWORM! I got shrinkage just thinking about it.

Why is Kunta dancing? "He has a bad case of bagworm."

It would be nice to see more pictures showing more detail....I would like to see this structure in a 3-D program....maybe you could get more closeup detail with a better lens setup...

Suspect it's a bit too late for that.

Around my yard i have found many of these;

As you can see the top one still has an inhabitant munching on some Lippia. It is also very similar to the type you found. They are on the ground in the grass. The bottom one has the sticks running longitudinally, with one being extra long for the moth/butterfly to stand on to dry its' wings. The location is on the coastal plain on the western edge of Australia.Jim
