They are subsets of the group known as an induction motor. Typically the subsets are divided by the number of poles in rotor and stator, their torque curve, and the wiring configuration.

Do you know the other types of motors available?

Click on "AC Induction Motor". You'll see a block diagram of an AC induction motor system with a description of operation.
