Need source for "Rickwell"(?) pipe.

07/22/2007 10:31 PM

I am seeking a source and technical information as well as information on installation standards and techniques for pre-insulated steel piping for heating lines, to be installed underground. I am told there is a product called "Rickwell". I'm not sure of the exact spelling, but I was unable to find anything through a Google search that would provide any of the above information. If anyone knows of a distributor or wholesaler for this material or something equivalent I would be very grateful if you could share this information with me.

It's actually RicWil and they still manufacture these kinds of pipes. Others are Tricon Piping Systems and Perma-Pipe.

Try your search again for Ricwil.

RicWil, Perma-Pipe, and others are not "off the shelf" products, but actually customed engineered and produced based on specific project requirements. They will want to know the material being piped, design temperature, carrier pipe material, insulation material, shipping length requirements, etc. etc. etc. It is not necessarily the cheapest system around, but if properly specified it will last 30 to 50 years.

I don't know about a supplier, but here is what "Rickwell" is:

"Rickwell systems are a way of insulating a pipeline that is essentially a pipe within a pipe with a layer of insulation between them. This presents problems, as when a leak occurs from the inner pipe, it may not escape from the outer pipe for some distance, which can lead to erroneous results."

That excerpt is from this article: http://www.irinfo.org/articles/article_3_2005_weigle.html

It sounds like this project is a bit large for DIY unless you have some really knowledgeable onsite help. Paying a consultant fee (or an experienced contractor, for that matter) could save you a bundle in the long run. Good luck.
