Maybe, for around town.

I don't see ICE (especially Diesel) going away for a long time.

I, for one, am glad to see that Toyota is this optimistic. There are only a few ways the ICE will ever "die" from our roads: fuel disappears, the need disappears, a more efficient and flexible system trumps the ICE.

It was mentioned at a LEAN conference that Toyota wants to make cars someday that clean the outside air as you drive the car. I realize it is quite ambitious, but it is something to strive for...

Volvo already tried that. They experimented with plating catalysts on the radiators such that the hot surfaces would react pollutants as the air was passed through the radiator. Not really sure how effective this would be in reducing pollution as I suspect most of the ozone is higher than the cars' radiators.
